Modern Architecture

Modern architecture is a style of architecture that emerged in the first half of the 20th century and became dominant after World War II. It was based upon new technologies, materials and forms.

Modernist architecture often rejected the traditional neoclassical architecture of the 19th century in favor of styles more radical and abstracted from daily life. It was inspired by the machine age.

In its heyday, it was derided by critics as too cold, impersonal, severe and lacking in any sense of beauty or gracefulness. The World Trade Center

The World Trade Center was a complex of seven buildings in Lower Manhattan, New York City, United States. The Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in the world from 1972 until they were surpassed by Chicago’s Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) in 1973, and remain the tallest twin buildings in the world. At 1,368 feet (417 m), they stood as the tallest structures on earth for a few years prior to their destruction in 2001 at the hands of terrorists who hijacked four passenger jets and flew two of them into each tower, causing their collapse.

The construction of the World Trade Center was conceived as an urban renewal project; it would replace an area that had been badly damaged by years of industrial pollution and neglect with what was hoped would become another Rockefeller Center-like complex that would revitalize Lower Manhattan. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) hired architect Minoru Yamasaki to design both towers which opened in 1973.

In 1966 Yamasaki proposed twin 110-story office towers; one was to have had five stories below ground while its counterpart would have only four floors below grade level because PANYNJ wanted more space for mechanical systems such as elevators without sacrificing square footage on upper floors where tenants could lease space easily if they wanted more than four stories above ground level
